D-I-S-R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Recently I have noticed just how much disrespect there is around us. I'm not sure if I am just getting more sensitive to it or if it is on the rise again. I know when I was growing up if I was half as disrespectful as what I see now, my daddy would have worn my hide out. We, as citizens of the planet earth, need to be more cognizant of how we act, how we treat others, and how we are judged by our actions.
Some examples:
1.) When walking on the trail at the Marine Corps Museum yesterday I had the displeasure to be the target of some disrespect. Now, I will be the first to admit that I am a big girl...always have been...but I AM TRYING to get better at my eating habits, and my exercise. I was walking on the trail, had just finished one of the sections at an incline, and was hot & sweaty. I passed a group of young Marines that were there, in uniform, minding my own business when I heard one of them make a comment directed to his friends, about me and my weight. They all started laughing. Did it bother me? Yes a little personally, but what bothered me more was the fact that they were in uniform, at the Marine Corps Museum, on the Memorial Trail, making fun of someone that they made an oath to protect when they joined the Marines.
2.) Everyday I see female students being disrespectful to themselves by either they clothing they wear, the language they use, their actions around boys, or how they treat the adults at school. They don't seem to care that actions-clothing-words have a profound effect on their reputation. We need to teach our young ladies to respect themselves more carefully.
3.) School Zones---We pass through a school zone for an elementary school on the way to my school. Right in the middle of that school zone, which is in a busy highway, is a traffic light. It amazes me everyday that people think the school zone ends at the light.....IT DOES NOT!! This particular zone is unique in that there are two elementary school directly across the highway from each other, so more students/parents/teachers, and people still blow through the zone when it is flashing. And then they flash their lights and blow their horn at you because you are doing the required 25mph.
These are just some examples of what I have observed....there are many more I could list, but I think you get the point. I challenge all of you that read this to go out into the world and be respectful...ask yourself "How will what I say right now or do right now be perceived by others? If it is bad, what can I do differently?" I am sure you will find yourself making better decisions and we will also be setting examples for our young men and women.
