YA Books: When Dimple Met Rishi and Learning to Swear in America

Another GREAT book I have read is When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

Menon's YA novel about becoming a young adult while following your dreams and passions and doing all this while dealing with your parent's Indian culture is amazing! She welcomes the reader into the lives of Dimple and Rishi, introduces us to their families, and gives us some insight into the culture of being Indian in America. While Dimple's mother wants her to focus on her beauty and looks in order to snag herself an Indian Husband, Dimple wants nothing more than to follow her dreams and become an amazing coder. She has been accepted at Stanford and wants to attend Insomnia Con in San Francisco, a summer program that allows participants to submerse themselves into coding in order to win the competition at the end and possibly meet Dimple's coding idol. Enter Rishi, he is very much the oldest son in his Indian family...he agrees and supports the culture expectations, including arranged marriages. So when his parents, old friends with Dimple's parents, announce that they have arranged a marriage between himself and Dimple, and that she will be at Insomnia Com, he heads to San Francisco intent on securing his future wife. But after being doused with iced coffee by Dimple when they first meet, he begins to realize that she may not be the perfect candidate to be his wife.

Following along on the bumpy and sometimes painful ride between following your heart and dreams, trying to stay true to your familial expectations, and still be young at heart, I ended up rooting for both of them. Rishi ends up questioning Dimple about her passions when she stands up to him about his hiding of his own talent and passions. A wonderful story about young love, family, life, and being true to yourself.

What a great novel. I love Yuri and Dovie. For a YA book you may not think that the characters would be too complex, but they really are....especially Yuri. Intelligent way beyond his years, brought to the USA to help a team put a plan together to save millions of lives, he is still only 17. And he is struggling with a cultural divide, being from Russia, meeting a girl and kissing for the first time, working with adults that are much older, and being lonely. Plus there is a huge asteroid hurtling towards earth. Yuri knows how to stop it but no one will listen to him because he is still only a teenager and his plan has not yet been published. Then he finds out that the US has plans to force him to defect.

Dovie is a breath of fresh air. She has hippies for parents and loves art. She saves Yuri’s life one night as he falls/jumps off a bridge. Then she takes him home with her to meet her family. They immediately welcome him into their fold, no questions. As the days pass, the friendship strengthens and Yuri must decide....save the world, stay with the girl or save the world and escape to another country so he can get home to Russia.
