Spirit Hi-jinks in the Media Center
When you ask people how they picture a library in their minds, depending on the age of the person you are asking, most will say quiet, peaceful, solitude, happy. Today's Library Media Centers are in fact quite the opposite, at least in high school.
Today's high school Media Center are a bustling and sometimes chaotic center to the school. A place for students to work on research papers & projects, check out books, work on group projects, or just a place to hang out when they have some free time. They are literally the "hub" of the school. The place from which everything else disseminates.
In my three years of being a Media Center Specialist, I have witnessed many things happening in the Media Center. From drawings on the tables, to students testing, to faculty appreciation luncheons, to evening meetings of the PTSO, Parents Advisory Committee, and Athletic Boosters. I have seen students tutor each other, comfort each other, and even come in to say hi to the Media Center Staff.
But, what I saw today is the most confusing and hilarious thing I have seen. I truly believe that the spirit of Halloween was alive and well today with one of our students. In the mornings before school starts, beginning at 7:00, students can come into the Media Center to check out books, turn books in, print homework, hang out, or finish last minute touches on homework and/or projects. When the bell rings at 7:23 there is a mad exodus to the doors. Once the students are gone, we go around pushing in chairs, picking up trash, and straightening the Media Center. WE have a very strict no food policy in the Media Center. Today beats everything we have ever found.....CORN!! Yes, that's right, corn....not candy corn, not dried Indian corn, but rather kernel corn like you would find in a can of corn....all over a computer area, including the floor-chair-keyboard-and counter. What?!?!?! Where did it come from? no one is admitting to that. But it has now become known as the "Great Corn Bandit" escapade.
